Why did I pick this book?
Recently, I had the opportunity to see the trailer for the upcoming Bollywood film Kesari Chapter 2. The film is based on the infamous 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The trailer was so compelling that it inspired me to research the subject further.
The film is based on Raghu and Pushpa Palat’s book The Case That Shook the Empire. I decided to read the book to assess later how faithfully the filmmakers portrayed historical events.
Another reason I picked the book is that my favourite actor, Akshay Kumar, plays the main lead in the Bollywood adaptation. He portrays the central character of Mr. C. Shankaran Nair.
Sir Chettur Sankaran Nair (1857–1934) was a lawyer, a leader of the Indian National Congress, and a Viceroy’s Executive Council member. He resigned from the Viceroy’s Executive Council in protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
